My Fujifilm Superia 400 X-Tra Film Simulation
The wait for Reala Ace on X is over! But! It’s not enough, for me at least. What Reala does give us is the best starting point yet for some of the most classic Fujifilm stocks such as Superia 400 and C200. This is the first of such sims, brought to you from the depths from my digital film lab. The first of these has been developed on my X100VI and aims to emulate what makes Superia and C200 the legends they are…green greens, slight greens in the shadows, vivid reds, and warm but not green whites. While you could shoot this in camera only, it really comes alive with a single click in Lightroom.
Much like my Gold 200, this one is better when shot at 1/3 overexposed. It’s best to get the whites as white as we can in camera without blowing them out, due to the way we will manipulate them with the accompanying Lightroom presets.
I find that these presets are best set to about 50-70% strength in Lightroom. There might be situations where you want to pull down the saturation a bit in very blue skies to better emulate the lighter blues of Superia 400. I am also finding that added film grain is only acceptable looking on 26mp sensors and begins to look much more digital on 40mp sensors such as the X100VI and X-T5, in which case I would add your favorite grain preset in LR.
Preset 1 - Call it the “everyday” preset, it does not apply fade or green into the shadows - this is the more C200 look
Preset 2 - The full film-look preset - this is more the Superia 400 look
As always, feedback is appreciated, enjoy! If you found this helpful, please consider buying me a coffee so I can fuel up and continue to bring you more content like this.
